Jamieson Creek
May 6, 2012
This little painting (6″ x 7.5″) is of Jamieson Creek, which is not even ten minutes drive from our front door. This is a desert-like region, featuring its own local cacti (which I discovered by way of my hand), and is called The Sunshine Capital of Canada. Water, while not scarce, has usage restrictions and homes are now being installed with water meters.
So to have the Jamieson splashing over and around rocks and fallen timbers is a great joy. It is the epitome of the ‘laughing brook’ of literature, and compliments the broad, slow-moving Thompson Rivers which run through town. Were it not for our rivers, Kamloops would be uninhabitable. Right now the creek and rivers are swelling from the melt-off of mountain snows. Kamloops itself is some 4,000 ft in elevation, the mountain snows are up that much higher, and June is when the river level is at its peak.
This painting was on the wall no longer than ten minutes before it was sold. My colleague in art, Lynda Jones, thought it complimented her pottery so well she went with her impulses. And that made my day.
This painting is stunning!! So happy to have come across your blog, your work is amazing! 🙂 Looking forward to seeing more!

We live backed-up against a mountain ridge and while talking I casually laid my hand on it, and promptly howled. They are very low to the ground and small, with great big yellow flowers if the Spring is particularly moist. And yes, not plentiful, but gifted in the thorn department. Thank you for stopping by.

I like the way you put it: “which I discovered by way of my hand.” I’m surprised to hear you have cacti way up there, though I imagine they’re a lot less common than in Texas.

Breathtaking work! I had written a long comment here and then went back to study the work a little more closely and lost the comment:( This piece is tremendously beautiful! I love the effect you achieve with watercolours. I am hopeful that someday I am able to achieve similar effects..with time perhaps. I learn so much by looking at your work and reading your comments. You are very kind to share your process with us. I have asked some others questions about their process and they are unwilling to share. You are an artist and a teacher Lance. Congratulations on your lovely work and your sale! Have a grand evening…..Lorelei

Thank you. I hope they will do well, too. It’s hard to tell, since there is a delay in reports on royalties. I suspect it will take a while to get noticed though. I have two books out so far, and one more in the sequel coming out soon.
My mother was a professional artist and did many fine paintings, in addition, she taught at the Adult Learning Institute in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida for 17 years. I have an eye and a love for art, even though I never really pursued my own talents. Most of what I know about art, Mom taught me on the side. If she were alive today, I’d have probably asked her to illustrate my books. Thanks for rooting for me. Know, please, that I am doing the same for you. 🙂

I envy your talent in watercolors. I never could do much with them, myself. My mother has done quite a few lovely paintings with them, and oils, too. So I appreciate fine art when I see it. It doesn’t surprise me that this little painting sold so quickly. It is a jewel.

Hi,
It is a lovely painting, and it does not surprise me at all that it sold so quickly. 🙂
What a lovely area to have so close to home, there is just something about a mountain stream/creek, the water is always so fresh and clean.
