My Great Niece and Nephew always enjoyed their Aunt and Grandmother’s ‘tuck-ins’, and the sharing of storybooks.
This transparent watercolour was painted from a reference photograph taken some years ago now.

No, it is not your fault–and it is not cheap pencils. Some colours are what are called ‘transparent’, and some are called ‘staining’. The ones which stain leave marks. These are usually the blue and red pencils. The transparent ones disappear–grey, brown, yellow, and even black should disappear when you add water, or leave a very pale mark. Also, if you want the pencils to disappear, use them very lightly. But watercolour is not a medium for people who want to be in control, because it does what it wants. The most a watercolour painter can do is guide it. The mediums which are best for control are oils and acrylics. I hope this helps you a little, and thank you for commenting, kofegeek!

Thank you for the explanation. I was learning how to conquer water color and I start it by using watercolor pencil first but I found some stripes rough. Maybe it because I use cheap watercolor pencils. But I keep trying. wish someday can draw as beautiful as yours 🙂

Thank you, kofegeek–and yes, I do sometimes use watercolour pencils when sketching in the initial picture because painting on top of it will make the lines disappear.

I don’t think I’ve seen very many figurative watercolours and I’m sure the difficulty in painting them is why. However, Lance, you have this wonderful ability to master your medium in so many ways. This is a beautiful painting that captures the loving tenderness in the family!

Everyone looks so happy, comfortable and relaxed, must have been a good story. You’ve certainly captured the joy they share in each other’s company. (I know that doesn’t come in a tube, but instead it’s straight from the heart).

I read to my kids constantly. What a nice memory depicted in your work. My daughter would stop me every time I read ‘Night Before Christmas’ and ask which is the mouse and which is the mice. She just couldn’t grasp the concept of plurals. And the picture in the book showed two mouses. So what’s a mice?

People are hard to replicate as it is, and I’ve never had much luck with watercolors, thus I admire those who have mastered them. So double kudos to you for a job well done. 🙂
